MODEST REVIEWS: 24/7 Rangers & Flyers: Road to the Winter Classic (HBO Sports, 2011)
So you’re too cool for sports? Yeah that’s okay: no one really gives a shit what you think about sports anyway.
For those of you who aren’t pretentious fucks, HBO sports is quickly improving on their high-end docu-journalistic sports coverage and effectively classing up one of the more barbaric sports in the world today.
I think the strongest part of this series is the sheer production quality. Real sports have never looked or sounded this good. The balance between elegant slow motion staged shots and actual game footage provides a wonderful spread of shots for anyone who finds the motion of the human body fascinating, and it does so in a manner that is neither repetitive nor boring.
The story seems to write itself week after week as we see these presumed neanderthal bruisers flesh out into relate-able and interesting people. I find players I hate on teams I hate to be damn near endearing and lovable at times.
It runs on Wednesday nights and and only airs about 5 hours worth of content, so I’d consider it a low-risk time waster if you’re willing to take the leap.
