MODEST REVIEWS BY MODEST MEN: The Shield (Shawn Ryan, 2002-2008)
Believe it or not, life isn’t a total abyss! If you’re having trouble finding a new excellent crime drama to follow after some recent betrayal of another, then FX’s come-and-gone series The Shield could be just what you need to fill the void!
The story centers around Vick Mackey, a dirty cop who has no problem breaking laws to stop lawbreakers. It’s clear from the first episode that there’s a lot more to Mackey than meets the eye. He proceeds to develop into one of the absolute best characters and performances in cable TV history.
Though Mackey commands center stage on The Shield, he is backed up by a variety of complex and interesting characters that are difficult to predict and never take arbitrary bullets to the face. The most interesting of these characters is Julian Lowe, a devoutly christian rookie who has to contend with his homosexual urges and the threats of his coworkers.
There is almost no music throughout the show, and a lot of handheld camerawork. This show swings for the fences in terms of realistic cinema, and generally knocks it out of the park. You will never see events transpire until a member of the force does. The show pulls you in without using attention-grabbing techniques and is all the more richer for it.
Did I mention that The Thing from Fantastic Four is in it!? OMGGG!!
9.5 out of 10.
